Per statistics collected from the FBI
One home burglary occurs every 15 seconds.
Most home invaders come in through a door.
1 out of 5 homes that are victimized by an intruder results in murder or some form of violent crime.
An intruder is usually a stone faced hardened criminal and carries a weapon of some sort, which leaves you or your family at their mercy. If you do not do as they say, such as giving them your valuables, cash, combination to your safe, information or whatever they demand, the result can be violent and or fatal.
The intruder generally comes right in through the front door, which if there is no security alarm or if the alarm is not activated is very easy. While many burglars just kick the door open, others intruders might just knock on the front door or ring your doorbell. Really, I bet you never thought a dangerous criminal would be so audacious as to come calling like a wanted guest?
There are recorded attacks of intruders pretending to be a salesman, stranded neighbor, maintenance worker, cable or internet provider, or even a police officer in an attempt to get you to unlock the door. They may even play on your sympathy and tell you they have kids or a sick person in the car.
To a criminal it does not matter whether you are rich, poor, young, old, male, female, or your ethnicity, as long as they feel your premises is an easy target. Most intruders are looking for a quick and easy catch, a smash and grab approach.
Home Intruder Murders: Statistics
The U.S, Department of Justice conducted a study and released its special report on National Crime Victimization in September 2010. According to this study;
Approximately 3.7 million home invasions occurred every year from the years 2003 to 2007. A member of the house hold was present in 28% of these invasions. 7% of the house hold members were victimized.
In 65% of those home invasions and victimization’s, the homeowner and the family member knew the burglar, and 35% of the intruders were strangers.
In most home invasions that end in violence the intruder does not start the night with intent to kill, but if they are interrupted during the burglary or occupants resist demands then the intruder(s) feel the need to command respect or enforce their demands with violence.
